Problems with starting a ‘92 Buick LeSabre?
I’ve been trying to get a ‘92 Buick LeSabre running, and I’m having problems with getting it to start. It’s been sitting for a few months, and the battery was dead. I had that charged and tested at a repair shop, but now when I try to start it, it clicks (sounds like only twice), then does nothing. After it clicks, all electrical equipment (dome light, radio, headlights, etc.) go off. After moving it back to the normal running position, the electronics come on (dimly) and then come back at full strength after a few seconds. I was told if it was the starter that it would click continuously and not just twice and start, and to check the terminals. The terminals seem ok, though.
The only thing I did notice is that there was basically no water in the battery, and hadn’t been when it was charged. I added some water, but I’m not exactly sure how that works and if it may need to be recharged now.
Any suggestions or knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
It probably needs a good charge, but that won’t cause what you are getting. You need to get a wire brush type battery terminal cleaner. Scrub both the terminals and the cable ends that connect to it. Also be sure the cable ends are fully seated on the terminals and that they are tightened. Hand pressed will not cut it.
If this was an old battery, it may show 12.8V but not have the amperage to operate the starter.
